  • The Tow Car Awards – Britain’s biggest and best annual tow car test programme – by experts from What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines and The Camping and Caravanning Club
  • Nine cars chosen from 37 contenders – rated by five weight classes, plus the Green Award,
  • Best Petrol, and Best Ultralight Tow Car categories, plus one overall winner
  • Cars ranged from small hatchbacks to large 4x4s, tested at the renowned MIRA Proving Ground
  • Winning cars: Citroën C4 Cactus, Škoda Octavia, Volkswagen Passat, Mazda CX-5, Volvo V40, Ford Mondeo and Land Rover Discovery
  • Overall winner: Volkswagen Passat Estate – first car to win three times (2007, 2011, 2015)
  • A fleet of the latest modern caravans from the Swift Group were supplied for the testing

Most people don’t usually get to tow their trailer, horse box, boat or caravan before choosing a new (or used) car, so that’s why the results of The Tow Car Awards 2015, Britain’s biggest and best annual tow car test programme, announced today, help everyone make a more informed choice of the best vehicles for more enjoyable, safer and stable towing.

From lightweight hatchbacks to heavyweight 4x4s, the good news from the team of experts from What Car? and Practical Caravan magazines and The Camping and Caravanning Club who judged this year’s Tow Car Awards is that the standard of cars was higher than ever. This made it tough to choose nine winners in the five weight classes (based on each car’s ‘kerbweight’), plus a Green Award, Best Petrol and Best Ultralight Tow Car Awards, and then one overall champion.

The dynamic and demanding towing test programme includes high speed stability, hill starts on a 1 in 6 gradient, plus emergency stops and lane changing manoeuvres. This all takes place in the safety of the MIRA Proving Ground in Warwickshire, with each car correctly matched to a caravan (with any stability aids removed or disabled) supplied by the Swift Group, or a lightweight trailer, weighted up to the recommended limit of 85 per cent of its ‘kerbweight’ (or manufacturer’s maximum towing limit, if lower). In addition, they are also assessed for other factors such as running costs, practicality and solo performance.

The following cars from Citroën, Škoda, Volkswagen, Mazda, Volvo, Ford and Land Rover were this year’s winners:

The Tow Car Awards 2015 – results:

  • Up to 1400kg: Škoda Octavia Hatch 2.0 TDI CR 150PS SE Business
  • 1400 to 1549kg: Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0 TDI BMT 150PS SE Business DSG
  • 1550 to 1699kg: Mazda CX-5 2.2D 175PS AWD Sport Nav
  • 1700 to 1899kg: Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0 BiTDI SCR BMT 240PS 4Motion GT DSG
  • 1900kg+: Land Rover Discovery 3.0 SDV6 SE Tech
  • Green Award: Volvo V40 Cross Country D4 Lux Nav Geartronic
  • Best Petrol Tow Car: Ford Mondeo 1.5T EcoBoost 160PS Titanium 5dr
  • Best Ultralight Tow Car: Citroën C4 Cactus BlueHDi 100 Feel
  • Overall Winner: Volkswagen Passat Estate 2.0 TDI BMT 150PS SE Business DSG

The new Volkswagen Passat is the first car to win the Tow Car Awards three times (2007, 2011 and 2015).  This year’s champion was a Volkswagen Passat Estate SE Business with a 2.0-litre TDI BlueMotion Technology engine, 150PS power output and DSG transmission. It also won its 1400 to 1549kg weight class, while a Passat Estate GT with a 2.0 BiTDI engine, 240PS power output and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system won its heavier 1700 to 1899kg weight class. Both made awesome tow cars, but as the judging criteria isn’t purely on towing performance, the front-wheel drive Passat Estate SE Business scored valuable extra points for affordability to make it the overall winner.

Commenting on the Tow Car Awards 2015, TV presenter and President of The Camping and Caravanning Club, Julia Bradbury said: “As so many of the 500,000+ members of The Camping and Caravanning Club enjoy their spare time using their cars for towing, it’s easy to see how important these results are to them, as well as to all the other people towing trailers on our roads. With more people starting camping and caravanning every year, we also hope these awards highlight the importance of knowing how much your car can legally and safely tow.”

Other notable winners this year include the Citroën C4 Cactus as Best Ultralight Tow Car and the Škoda Octavia, a previous overall winner in 2013, champion of the lightest weight class for three years running.

The Mazda CX-5 won its weight class for the second time, and the mighty Land Rover Discovery won the heaviest weight class for the eighth time in the nine years of the Tow Car Awards.

Proving that some of the latest, smaller petrol engines have nearly as much pulling power as diesels, the Best Petrol Tow Car Award was given to the new Ford Mondeo with a 1.5-litre EcoBoost 160 PS engine.

Environmental credentials are also important for today’s tow car drivers, and the 2015 Green Award went to Volvo again, this year for the V40 Cross Country which meets the latest Euro 6 emissions standard and can return a claimed 65.7 mpg on the official combined cycle when driven solo.
