Living And Working On A Canal Boat Sets A Local Lady Free

A local lady, Gillian Woodland, has told iHubbub’s home business community how her life has gone from frazzled and hectic to a leisurely, peaceful pace since moving onto her canal boat on the Aldermaston wharf between Newbury and Reading.

She lived in a boat house down by the river … Chris Andrews wrote this famous ol’ tune for ‘Pretty Belinda’, while the lovely Gillian craved a leisurely lifestyle for many years and finally moved into her canal boat with hubby, Alan, last October.

Life is now all about creativity and freedom … and the vigour of a four-month-old Staffie pup called Milo.

Gillian said: “I absolutely love it here. I walk Milo up and down the muddy tow paths and he sits at my feet beside the fire while I work on my client’s marketing campaigns.”

Before Milo’s walk Gillian preps up dinner and places it on the top of the fire mantle to bubble away slowly all day. Then, after walking Milo, she’ll warm up beside her fire with a large pot of tea and begin her working from home day.

iHubbub was completely intrigued when they found out that Gillian worked and lived on her narrow boat and decided to film her lifestyle routine.

But how on earth does one work from home on a boat with no obvious electricity or broadband in sight? Easy, says Gillian. They convert the boat’s battery power to electricity voltage, which fires up laptops and other household appliances.

For broadband, Gillian uses her iPad as a wi-fi hot-spot to gain access to the internet on her Mac. This enables her to work normally on her client’s social media campaigns, analyse their websites and all-manner of marketing tasks that one would imagine simply could not be done on a boat!

Gillian was thrilled to find iHubbub’s home business community and has already engaged in a PR webinar and will be joining the online speed networking sessions – all this while sitting in her slippers beside her fire in her very own ‘boat-house’.

iHubbub prides themselves on their eclectic home business community of people who use their talents and passions to come up with fascinating business ventures.

Co-Founder of iHubbub Newbury businesswoman, Paula Wynne said: “We love hearing how our members work from home, some of them in most unusual places … just like Gillian, but all of them making a success of home working by running a business adapted to suit their way of life. Gillian is an excellent ambassador for our home business community!”
